With recession comes the overtly difficult task of weaning out not-so-good performers from the rest. Actually the task of filtering is not all that difficult but, to justify to oneself "does this person really not have it in him/her" is the difficult part. I recently met a couple of youngsters (mostly 22-28 yrs) who had been told to quit due to non performance. I knew some of these guys for the last couple of months and it did not really seem that they were all that awful. Then, what had gone so wrong that they were being told to leave the company without even serving proper notice period.
The real problem
I find numerous companies recruiting people from different background justifying their need to create a diverse human resource pool but spending paltry time and money to align these new recruits to the organizational culture and way of functioning. Even if a person comes with over five years relevant experience, he/she needs to be given at-least six months (with adequate hand-holding)to be able to judge properly. Organizations have become extremely complex and how-much-ever management tries, there will be teams which continue to have their own set of rules.
